FHWA UHPC Girder Project

Following are a series of videos showing the mixing and placement of Steelike UHPC into girder forms for a recent FHWA Girder Project.

The videos above and the picture below are from a recent FHWA UHPC Girder Project in which Steelike UHPC Mix Design was used. What made this groundbreaking was that traditionally mixing UHPC requires setting up a mobile batch plant. Said plant requires special mixers that are expensive to rent and even more expensive to purchase. Especially if you , as a contractor, are only going to be needing to use it once or twice a year. The good news is that with a clean and dry standard Ready-Mix Truck and specific training you can mix Steelike UHPC onsite with far less specialized equipment. This is not to say it is easy, just that it can and has been done successfully of the years.

Full Disclosure:

Mixing Steelike UHPC on site in a Ready-Mix Truck requires an accurate and correct way of getting the water into the truck. As a rule of thumb, the use of a pressurized 2″ diameter hose with a water pre-calibrated meter is crucial. How do you know if you have the correct set up.

  1. The water most be able to hit the back of the mixer from the opening .
  2. said water must be accurately metered so as you add the water you know exactly how many gallons are being introduced. Once 95% of the water is in, you change to a standard hoe which needs to be part of the metered output.

Contact us for exact requirements and training. Just because this is a just-add-water UHPC mix design does in no way make it easier. it simply means that there is less of a chance of putting in too much or too little of any given additive or ingredient.
